Village Hero Delivers the Best Meatball Hero

I returned to Village Hero to see how their meatball hero was. Friends have told me that it is the standard to beat. For those caring from home, a great meatball hero is judged by the following criteria:

It must have tender, flavorful meatballs, a rich and well-balanced marinara sauce, and a sturdy bread that can handle the fillings. The cheese, whether provolone, mozzarella, or another Italian variety, should melt perfectly, creating a creamy, delicious layer.

Breaking it down further:

The Meatballs

· Texture: The meatballs should be light and airy, with a smooth, bouncy texture.

· Flavor: A combination of ground beef and veal

· Moisture: The meatballs need to maintain juiciness and not be dry.

· Doneness: The meatballs are cooked until they're browned and cooked through

 The Marinara Sauce:

· Flavor: The sauce should be rich and well-seasoned, with a balance of sweetness and acidity.

· Consistency: The sauce should be thick enough to coat the meatballs but not too thick to be overwhelming.

· Cooking: Simmering the sauce allows it to develop its full flavor.

The Bread:

· Sturdiness: A sturdy bread is essential to support the weight of the meatballs and sauce.

· Texture: The bread should be soft enough to be easily bitten into.

The Cheese:

· Type: Italian cheeses like provolone, mozzarella, or fontina work well, melting into a creamy layer.

· Quantity: Don't be afraid to add extra cheese for a more indulgent sandwich.

· Melting: The cheese should melt perfectly, creating a creamy and delicious element.

Village Hero Taste Test:

I did not go with cheese this time. I did not want the cheese to interfere with my tasting of the meatballs. The first observation was the size of the meatballs. They were approximately the size of a quarter as opposed to the size of a silver dollar (or Toonie for our Canadian friends). These meatballs were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The bread was fresh and added to the whole dining experience. I have to give Village Hero the thumbs on their meatball hero.

My only mistake was ordering the junior size hero. I felt the large would be overkill. But after eating it, I really wanted more because it was so good.

My wife ordered the Chicken Caesar Wrap. What was interesting was the chicken was a large breast of chicken. Normally, you get slices or diced chicken in Caesar wraps. But they do cook a good chicken breast. I did have an issue with it because the dressing was unevenly applied through out the wrap. So it ended up that portions had too much and other had too little dressing. They need to be more careful in their preparation of their wraps.
