Tom Sawyer Restaurant Boca Raton
The weather was crappy in Florida so we decided to go out for brunch. A friend recommended Tom Sawyer Restaurant in Boca Raton. It is in a non-descript strip mall like so many places in Boca Raton. Of course, there was a wait. Like every other good place during the High Season, you have to expect a wait. I do not know what people do other than wait on a line to eat a meal. It must fill their days.
The inside of the restaurant is like a country store. Almost like a Cracker Barrel but with better food. The menu is the typical brunch food of Omelettes, French Toast, Pancakes and Waffles. We decided to go with a blend of eggs, pancakes and French toast.
Interesting enough, they did not bake the bananas into the pancakes but they did bake the chocolate chips into them (along with placing them on top). As a result, I enjoyed the chocolate chip pancakes better than the banana ones. It felt more complete. With the bananas on top, it just felt like a side. The French Toast was good but it just did not compare to the pancakes.
The other negative about the pancakes were that some of them were burnt on one side. Now, I can understand if you do this at home but for a breakfast place, they should have nailed down the cooking of pancakes to avoid them from being burnt. Tom Sawyer claims that it serves the best breakfast since 1985. If you claim to be the best, you need to be the best. Unlike Maureen’s Kitchen in Smithtown, NY, Tom Sawyer is not on the level of the best breakfasts!!
As to a rating, I would give Tom Sawyer a 8.5. The food was definitely tasty and above average. They just fail to reach elite status with the bananas on the side and the burnt pancakes. The ultimate question, would I go back again? The answer is yes.
