Know Your Audience When Asking About a Restaurant

A PopUp Bagel Shop just opened in Roslyn over the weekend. I have never experienced a bagel from PopUp Bagels. It seems to have quite the buzz. They sold out on Saturday and Sunday before 12:00 noon. There must be something exciting about it.

A friend of my bought them this morning. When asked, his response was that they were very good. That was the extent of his response.

In my mind that begs a question on a couple of fronts. I do not have enough information to evaluate what was good. I also have to go back and wonder if his evaluation aligns with mine. He may have a different grading scale than I do. Without context, I do not know whether his recommendation is worth anything. For example, he may feel that Domino’s Pizza is very good. This may be the case if you are from Florida with the lack of alternatives. But if you are from New York, Domino’s is a third tier (if that) supplier of pizza!!

Why am I bringing this up? The answer is that with all of the online review sites and recommendations, it is hard to truly know if a restaurant is good or bad from reviews from strangers. We all need a baseline to be comfortable with a review. We do not have that and that is why I struggle with how people can classify a terrible restaurant, in my opinion, as a true gem. Other that bang my head against the wall, I do not have a clue how to solve this problem. But I guess the first step is recognizing there is a problem. Please help!
