Domenico’s in Levittown is Closing (Another Childhood Memory Is Gone)

I just read in Newsday that Domenico’s is closing. They have been around for 58 years. It started as a pizza shop and then expanded to three large dining rooms. One of the best things about it was its location next to Dortoni’s Bakery. What could be better than have a great Italian meal followed up by a tasty dessert.

This restaurant is a reminder of my youth. My parents used to love to take us there and with their large tables it could accommodate the entire family. This may have been the place where I fell in love with chicken parmigiana. I do not even know what else is on the menu since I always ordered that.

I am saddened by the loss of another restaurant of my youth. It has been years since I was last there. I have not been back since my parents have passed but I can still taste its food and the great memories we had there.

Time marches on but the tastes and memories of my youth have moved on. First we lost Howard Johnson’s and its fish fry. Followed by Long’s Chinese Restaurant in the Mid-Island Mall. If you ordered take-out, you had the pleasure of walking through the kitchen to order at its island.

I also miss Friendly’s where I would get a Patty Melt and a Fribble. Sometimes I would add sprinkles to the Fribble which just added to my amazing experience (until all of the sprinkles would get caught in the straw)

Fortunately, Delmonico’s is not closing for another month so I will endeavor to have a farewell meal there.
