Tasca -- A Refresing Spanish Taverna in NYC

This past weekend, we treked into NYC for dinner with friends at Tasca on the Upper West Side. It is a fusion of Spanish and Carribean food. We were seated in the basement which was a little eerly but quieter than upstairs. Overall, the food was good even though it was salty.

We started with the trio of empanadas and grilled octupus. Both were the highlight of the meal.

For the main dish, we had the paella and the branzino. The paella was tasty but really salty. The waiter said it must taste salty due to the salt that was in the seafood. A strange comment but uncharacteristically for me, I let it slide.

Both dishes were tasty though. For dessert we tried the cheesecake and the flan. They were ok

On a side note, I think that we pulled the short straw with our choice of waiters. He was no help on the wine choice and he offered no real help on the menu choices either. He did get our orders right but I felt that his tip was not earned for his service. For those keeping score at home, we did tip our traditional 20% on the bill.

Our conclusion was the food was good, service not so much. With all the restaurants in NYC, why go back to this one.
