Stellina of Oyster Bay -- Very Highs and Lows
We were very excited to try Stellina Ristorante in Oyster Bay. The restaurant faces the parking lot off a main street in Oyster Bay. It was smaller than we expected and the atmosphere was best described as cozy.
Stellina was highly recommended by a bunch of my friends. Different people suggested various meal choices. It seemed that we could do no wrong by ordering off the menu. As a result, we started with a Margherita Pizza followed by the Pappardelle Ragu and Veal Chop.
The first thing that surprised us is that they used buffalo mozzarella on the pizza. The crust was absolutely amazing. The sauce and cheese were good but I may be a more traditionalist and prefer the regular mozzarella for pizza.
The Pappardelle Ragu was the best dish of the evening. It was so good that I would go back to Stellina just for this. The pappardelle was so fresh and light that I was content to eat it with or without the meat ragu. But fortunately for us, the meat ragu was just as good as the pasta. All I can say is that dish is the standout of my month.
Unfortunately for us, we did not end our meal with the pizza and pasta. We also ate the veal chop which was fried almost to the crisp. With the buffalo mozzarella on top of this fried mess, the veal chop was just plain greasy. I felt like it would be better if they just threw the dish away without having inflected it on us.
With the highs from the Pizza and the Pappardelle and the low of the Veal Chop, I struggle on how to rate Stellina. In the end, I have to give it a qualified thumbs up because I would return just for the Pappardelle Ragu. But I struggle on recommending them since they butchered the veal chop.
