Sometimes the Food on Long Island is not that Good.

I just committed a major faux pas (a phrase that I had to look up to make sure that I was using it correctly). I had a friend in from Texas and I suggested we go to Besito for dinner. My friend’ reaction was just really! How could I suggest a Mexican restaurant to a someone who has access to the best Tex-Mex in the world. His fast-food Mexican restaurant probably blows away anything we had.

He also asked how would I feel if he suggested that we go for Bagels or Pizza in Austin. I then realized how stupid I was in suggesting something that could not compare to his local homegrown food. It started to make me think that even though we are the center of the universe especially when it comes to food, there are some foods that would be almost inedible for people from other parts of the country.

I am not talking about how the best Chinese food would be in Flushing or Chinatown compared to the local Chinese food on Long Island. Here is my short list of food that we may consider good but does not compare with the food prepared in other parts of the country.

Mexican Food – The Mexican Food that we have here does not compare with the traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex food that people in Texas and California have access to. I think that we would need a mass migration of immigrants to get close to the quality of their food.

Thai Food – I really enjoy the food of Sarin in Greenvale but from my dining experience of Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas, I have seen the light. The Thai food we have just does not compare to food of Las Vegas and other parts.

Lobster Rolls – While I really do enjoy various lobster rolls here on Long Island (Lunch, the Lobster Roll and Jordan Lobster Farms), nothing compares with the ones served in Maine and Massachusetts. I know it is hard to admit that people in Massachusetts do anything better than we do, they are good at lobster rolls and clam chowder. I have to believe that it is because the have access to such fresh lobsters.

Southern Food  -- Hands down, we just do not compare to New Orleans for Cajun and Creole food. If you have had really good gumbo, turtle soup, po-boys, jambalaya then you just know.

Fish Tacos – If you have been out to San Diego, you may have experience really good fish tacos. I have tried a boat load of fish tacos on Long Island and in other parts of the country and nothing compares. It is just a slice of heaven.

BBQ and Ribs – Some people believe that it is a religious experience to have ribs and BBQ in St Louis or Kansas City. I can not disagree. In fact, BBQ in Austin is pretty damn good. I do not believe anyone would challenge the conclusion that we have to tip our hat to the BBQ  down south.

Let me know if I missed something!
