Shanghai You Garden Westbury -- The Place for Dumplings
I had time to kill before picking up dinner so I wondered into 99 Ranch Supermarket in Westbury. As I exploring I saw their food court and stopped at Shanghai You Gardens, which is an offshoot of the Flushing and Bayside locations. What stopped me in my track was the Pekin Duck hanging out front.
A little description may be necessary. 99 Ranch Supermarket has a food court of some sort. It is basically take out with a couple of tables to sit at. I guess a quick place to grab some food after you go food shopping.
I had a dilemma. I had already ordered dinner from another restaurant nearby but I wanted to really eat the Pekin Duck. Fortunately for me, Shanghai You Gardens sells Duck Bao Buns. I ended up ordering 4 of them and ate them before heading to dinner
My original intention was to eat 2 and bring home the rest for my wife. It did not end up working out that way. I ate them all and then tried the Shrimp Shumai. I finished them as well. I have to say that this could have been my favorite meal of the week.
The bao buns were really light and airy with just the right consistency. I only wished there was more duck in the bao buns but I understand that is the traditional way of serving them. It is hard to find good Duck Bao Buns on Long Island. In fact, it is not easy to find any Duck Bao Buns. So I was happy on both fronts.
As to the Shrimp Shumai, I felt a little let down. This probably had more to do with the fact that I was so happy with my Duck Bao Buns than anything else. There were nice large pieces of shrimp in the shumai.
I think that next time, I will commit to the entire Pekin Duck. I am very excited to try it. If you are duck lover, I highly recommend Shanghai You Gardens!!
