Rant of the Week - Why Do Restaurants Want to Make Us Suffer with Small Limited Menu Options

There is a common trend among restaurants, especially new ones, to provide a limited menu of just a few items. For example, the North Folk Table and Inn only lists 5 entrees on their menu. It turns out that their food truck (when available) offers a more diverse menu than their restaurant.

I understand that by limiting their menu they can reduce the amount of waste and thereby increase their profitability. I also do not expect them to have all the options that the old Greek diners used to provide. But come on man!! By offering a vegetarian option, a fish, one chicken and two steak options, are they really serving the culinary demand of their clients.

Do these restaurants think they are the second coming of Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc? For those unaware, Thomas Keller runs the French Laundry restaurant in Napa Valley, which is considered a bucket list restaurants. He opened Ad Hoc, a simple casual restaurant next door that only serves one or two entrees each day. He changes the menu daily. Excellent food in a casual environment.

I can assure you that the restaurants on Long Island that think that they are in the same league as Thomas Keller are in for a rude surprise because they are not. They may be pretentious but they do not deliver on the dining experience or quality food you can expect from a Thomas Keller restaurant.

It would be great if these restaurants would provide 10 dishes so that customers could have a choice in what they want for dinner.
