Rant about Restaurants Charging for Bread and Water

Time to Stop Restaurants from Becoming Airlines with All of Their Incidental Fees.

Time to Stop Restaurants from Becoming Airlines with All of Their Incidental Fees.

As the old crotchety man that I am, I remember the time that restaurants would offer up free hot fresh bread along with all the water you can drink.  The bread was a great starter to stave off your appetite or as a compliment to your entree.  Water is a mainstay for me.  No need to say anything more.

Over the last few years, some restaurants have eliminated the free bread and now charge upwards of $10 for artisanal bread baskets.  We all understand that inflation impacts both restaurants and customers. Some have argued that by doing this restaurants are holding back raising the prices.  This argument would be attractive if it was true.  Restaurants have also raised prices on their entrees so it is a money grub.

There have been stories about some restaurants starting to charge for tap water (not for bottled water).  They sometimes frame as a charge for the glasses and pitcher.  I also heard of one restaurant charging their patrons for their doggy bags when they take their food home.

It sounds to me that restaurants are learning the tricks of the incidental fees charged by airlines and hotels.  Soon we may see a reservation surcharge for the best tables in the house. These incidental fees always bother me.  I think it is high time that we stand up against them and take a stand.
