Pietros Roslyn -- Yet Another NYC Italian Restaurant that is Good

We headed over to Pietros in Roslyn (in the old Jolly Fisherman space) and had a lovely meal. They did not change the layout of the restaurant. It appeared that they changed the lighting, wallpaper and the carpet and they were good to go.

We ordered a Caesar salad to start and then we had a veal parmigiana and a veal pizzaiola (our friend ordered a shrimp parmigiana)

The Good: the food was all tasty especially the veal. I would have like a more traditional Caesar salad but this one passed the mustard. The veal in both of our dishes was very tender and brought out the flavors extremely well. I would definitely order these dishes again.

Doug's NewsletterEvery Thursday, I provide simple tips to help you create more pauses — with a generous sprinkling of humor — in 5 minutes or less.

The Bad: the waiter brought out our entrees while we were still finishing up our salads. He ended up taking away the first plate in one hand and placing the other plate in the same motion. I was feeling rushed and I hate that. We spoke to the manager and he explained that our waiter was confused between our orders and another tables. He did apologize.

The Second Bad: at 8:30 pm on a Friday, the main dining room was only half full (let alone the other rooms were closed off). I checked for a reservation on the following night and they had plenty of availability. The lack of patrons does not bode well for the restaurant. I would not be surprised if they close within the year.

It begs the question on why the restaurant is not crowded on a weekend. I think that this relates to the switching issue. While the food is good at Pietros, is it better than the other Italian restaurant options nearby? I know I have a few Italian restaurants that I go to on a regular basis so if I were to swap one of those out for Pietros, it has to be materially better than my current choices. And it is not.

My conclusion is that I liked the food and the atmosphere at Pietros and I may go back at some time in the future. But it will not become a regular in my rotation.
