Louie's Manhasset Restaurant
We had heard that Louie’s Manhasset Restaurant had reopened after a interior refresh. So off we went to Manhasset. For those of you who are unaware Louie’s is a diner near the train station that has been around for years. Unlike most diners on Long Island, Louie’s is a relatively small place with about 20 booths and seating for about a dozen at the counter. They did a really good job on the remodel. It is light and airy. A welcome change to other local diners.
When we arrived at 1:30 PM on a Sunday (they close at 2:30 on Sundays), Louie’s was hopping with a line out the door. We only waited a short time and the line was much better than expected. A downside to the busy restaurant is that they did a less than spectacular job cleaning our booth. But after a second cleanup we were good to go.
We ordered banana chocolate chip pancakes and a chef’s salad. The star of our show were the pancakes. Unlike our recent experiences at other diners, these pancakes were cooked to perfection. They were not burned like others. The bananas were cooked inside the pancakes as opposed to some lazy cooks who just place them on top when the pancakes are close to be finished.
A question did come up on why are the syrup containers always sticky? If you have ever been to IHOP, you know my pain. These were no where near the sticky factor of IHOP. But it does beg the question, how often do breakfast places clean their syrup dispensers? It is hard to argue if they do it daily but some places definitely missed the memo on cleaning the syrup dispensers.
We ordered the chef’s salad chopped and it really added to the experience. The ingredients were the typical chef salad. The dressing was served on the side as is the case for chef’s salad. Why, you ask? I do not know and would greatly prefer all salads to be dressed. I just adds to the experience.
My overall take is that Louie’s Manhasset Restaurant’s delivers the ideal customer and culinary experience. My only regret is that we passed on the soup. I would have loved to try their Manhattan Clam Chowder, which is a staple at most diners now. At least, I have a reason to go back now!!
