Limited Travel for Dining: People Stick Close to Home

Following up my realization that people in Port Washington do not travel outside of their town for dinner, I started to wonder is that a common theme. Much to my surprise, it is. From a recent research publication, most people will only travel 3.1 miles for dinner or 11 minutes. I bet the 11 minutes is a more reliable statistic. Assuming it is true, this sheds a new light on the topic for me.

When I suggested to another couple to travel to a new restaurant about 30 minutes away, they looked at me as if I had two heads. I could not understand why they objected so strongly. I thought they were the out of the ordinary and just plain lazy. If the food is good, then why not spend a little bit of time traveling to a restaurant. Now it seems that I am the outlier. As the light bulb went off, I can confirm from my personal experience with friends that people do not want to travel. An extra 5 minutes can eliminate a whole bunch of restaurant opportunities.

If I lived with this 11 minute (3.1 mile) limitation, my dining experience would be limited to maybe a dozen restaurants. I would have access to Steak, Greek, Italian, Mexican and Japanese. A much broader variety than I expected but heaven help me if the Italian and Greek restaurants went out of business.

How far would you travel for a good restaurant?
