Hicksville’s Best Chinese? A Flavorful Look at O Mandarin
Stepping into O Mandarin in Hicksville is like crossing a threshold into another world. The ambiance is the first thing that tells you that this restaurant is something different.

Gone is the familiar Long Island landscape, replaced by an elegant ambiance that whispers of traditional Chinese artistry. Intricately carved wooden panels, warm lighting, and thoughtfully placed artwork create a sophisticated yet welcoming space. This isn’t your typical neighborhood Chinese takeout; O Mandarin offers an elevated dining experience focused on the nuanced flavors of Beijing and Hunan cuisine.
From the moment we were seated, the attentive service hinted at the culinary adventure to come. Our server was knowledgeable and passionate, guiding us through a menu brimming with both familiar favorites and intriguing regional specialties. We received both a digital and paper menu which allowed us to peruse through our options. We decided to embark on a tasting journey, eager to sample the diverse offerings.
The Doornail Dumplings (beef dumplings) were a revelation. Each dumpling were delicious

Next, up we ordered the Scallion Pancakes. This dish came out like a scallion puff rather than a pancake. The best scallion pancakes that we ever had.

For our main courses, we tried the Pekin Duck, a classic. The duck dish was executed with finesse. The presentation was stunning, and the flavor was even more captivating. The skin was lacquered to a beautiful mahogany, offering a delightful crackle with each bite, while the meat beneath was tender, smoky. The duck pancakes were light and tasty. This could have been the best Pekin Duck that I ever had.

We complimented the duck dish with a Kung Pao Chicken. The chicken had the right amount of spice and flavorful sauce. They served this dish with Asparagus, which is a change from our traditional orders. It definitely added created a more balanced dish.

Even the seemingly simple Shrimp Fried Rice was a standout. The rice grains were distinct and perfectly cooked, tossed with a vibrant medley of fresh vegetables that retained their individual textures and flavors – a far cry from the often-mushy versions found elsewhere.

Overall:
O Mandarin is a true gem in Hicksville, offering a genuine taste of elevated Northern Chinese cuisine. The attention to detail in both the food and the ambiance is evident. While the prices might be a touch higher than your average Chinese restaurant, the quality of the ingredients, the skillful preparation, and the exceptional service more than justify the cost. If you’re looking for a memorable and flavorful Chinese dining experience that goes beyond the usual, O Mandarin is a must-visit. Be prepared to have your perception of Chinese food pleasantly redefined.
Verdict: Highly Recommended!
