Where Have All The Bakeries Gone?

Bakeries Fall to Costco

Where Have All the Bakeries Gone?

When I was a kid, we always would stop by the local bakery for some bread and a cookie (either a black and white or chocolate chip cookie. Slowly over time, many of these bakeries closed and you have to get packaged cookies and cake from supermarkets. This is Long Island damnit!!

Some of the surviving bakeries worthy of the past are Walls and Dortoni.

I spoke with a bakery owner who said that they typically make most of their profit from the sale of cakes for birthday parties and such. The along came Costco who sells sheet cakes for a third of the price of the bakeries. These cakes are delicious. I know I purchased these Costco cakes instead.

Seems like another declining industry killed by a big box store. A sad sign of the times.

I would feel for the bakeries but they have reducing the quality of their products as business decline. For example, they do not bake their items fresh each day. The old Bakery, used to only have their baker come in twice a week. So in effect, you could and I usually did buy stale baked goods at premium pricing.

In the end, we will be telling our kids that we used to go to these stores that have fresh baked goods instead of getting packaged items in the supermarket or at Costco. My kids will just roll their eyes at me for another bygone era memory.
