We should take a moment to reflect on the passing of the AOL Dial-Up Service. The end of AOL dial-up isn’t just a technological footnote, it is the final nail in the coffin for the generation of the Internet. AOL democratized the internet and introduced millions to online connectivity. For those who remember the anticipation of You’ve Got Mail! and the distinctive sound of a modem handshake, it’s a bittersweet farewell to a defining piece of digital history. Now all we have left is the AOL email addresses which are unfortunately still used only by elder people. It is almost an embarrassment to have this email extension. When these email address cease to be used, no one will remember AOL and its importance to the development of the Internet.
As we mourn restaurants that have closed, we should do so for companies that have influenced our lives.
