I recently had the opportunity to dine at Golden Steer at One Fifth with friends. The restaurant’s premise, transporting the glamour of old-school Las Vegas to the heart of Greenwich Village is the kind of sales pitch I’d usually approach with skepticism. However, given the legendary status of the original Las Vegas institution, it was an invitation I couldn’t pass up.
My takeaway? Golden Steer perfectly executes the concept of Dinner and a Show. You visit not just for the food which is outstanding, but for a masterclass in ambiance, presentation, and old-world service with a focus on the highest level of details.
The Ambiance & Service
The aesthetic is heavy on mahogany, blending a classic steakhouse feel with a mid-century Vegas touch. For history buffs, the decor is a treasure trove; my favorite item was the original Flamingo porcelain sculpture gifted by Bugsy Siegel to his investors.

The service, however, is what truly elevates the evening. The attention to detail is meticulous, starting with water served at a specific temperature dictated by management. Between courses, the staff replaced silverware in a choreographed, orchestrated manner. Our waiter was not only friendly but brought a level of technical skill to the table that significantly enhanced the evening.
The Culinary Highlights
Iconic Starters
The meal began with warm, buttery rolls, a simple touch perfected by the fact that the butter was tempered for effortless spreading.

The Butcher’s Cut Meatballs: Served with heirloom polenta, these were a savory standout.

The Caesar Salad: Prepared tableside with incredible flair, this was easily one of the top three Caesar salads I’ve ever had. The performance of the preparation made it a true highlight of the night.

The Main Event
The 50oz dry-aged Porterhouse is a definitive showstopper. It arrived with a perfect char while maintaining a tender and delicious interior. The Filet was exceptionally soft, and the NY Strip side was, quite simply, delicious.

Elevated Sides
We navigated a menu of high-end comfort food with mostly consistent results:
Whipped Potatoes & French Cuff Fries: The potatoes were luxuriously smooth, and the fries offered a perfectly seasoned, crispy bite.

The Vegetables: The Buttered Spring Carrots were the standout vegetable of the evening. Conversely, while the Creamed Sweetcorn was tasty, it didn’t quite reach the elite level of the other sides.

The Double-Down: Despite the abundance of starch, we ordered the Macaroni and Cheese. It was a brilliant move with a surprisingly light, flavorful, and a table favorite.

A Grand Finale
The experience reached its peak with the tableside flambé of Bananas Foster. Our waiter delivered one of the best preparations of this classic dessert I have ever witnessed. It was a theatrical, delicious, and memorable conclusion to the evening.
The Final Verdict
Golden Steer at One Fifth Avenue delivers one of the most memorable dining experiences in Manhattan. They excel at the intersection of ambiance and attention to detail. It is important to note that the pricing reflects the caliber of the experience, it will be an expensive evening. That said, for those looking for a bucket list meal that delivers on every promise, the Golden Steer is an absolute must-visit. My take is a return trip is mandatory!!
