We are on a constant hunt for the definitive best lobster roll on Long Island. From Montauk to the Gold Coast, every seafood shack claims the crown but very few deliver on the promise. We recently headed to Butler’s Flat in Port Washington. It is located on Manhasset Bay and has quintessential summer vibe.
We went with one question on our minds: Do they serve the best lobster roll on the North Shore?
Spoiler Alert: No, they do not.
While the main event was a letdown, there were still highlights to the evening. If you are planning a visit, here is what you need to know before you go.
Atmosphere: Sunset, Serenity, and Seating
First, let’s talk about the undeniable appeal of Butler’s Flat. This is a seasonal restaurant that perfectly captures the feeling of a New England summer right here on Long Island.
The bay views are absolutely stunning. If you time your visit right, sunset over the water is a serene, Instagram-worthy experience. It is the ideal backdrop for a relaxed dinner.
However, be warned: this is a highly popular spot. As you might expect from waterfront dining on Long Island, they get incredibly busy during dinner hours on the weekends. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night, be prepared to wait for that perfect table by the water.

The Food: A Stunning Start…
Our culinary journey at Butler’s Flat started strong. In fact, the appetizers were the highlight of the night.
The star of the menu was, surprisingly, the Clam Chowder. This wasn’t the traditional, sludge-like heavy cream base that we often find (and honestly, hate). Butler’s Flat has found the perfect balance, it’s creamy and rich without being overly heavy. This lighter consistency works beautifully for a hot summer night.

We also sampled the Stuffed Quahog (baked clam), which was a solid, good dish that prepared us well for the main event.

…And a Bland Finish: The Lobster Roll
After such a promising start, expectations were high for the reason we came: the Butler’s Flat lobster roll.
When it arrived at the table, it certainly looked the part. It featured large, generous chunks of lobster and was served alongside a mound of crispy fries. But looks can be deceiving.

While the quantity of meat was there, the flavor was not. The lobster roll was completely bland. It lacked the proper seasoning, lemon, or butter needed to elevate the sweet taste of the lobster. For the premium price that lobster rolls demand on Long Island, a dish this bland resulting in a disappointing experience is hard to overlook.
The Verdict
So, is Butler’s Flat worth the trip? It depends on what you are looking for.
If your primary goal is to find waterfront drinks on Long Island with a killer view and excellent clam chowder, then Butler’s Flat is a fantastic place to spend an evening. Go for the serenity of the bay, but manage your expectations for the entree.
However, if you are purely on a mission for the best lobster roll on Long Island, we suggest heading elsewhere. Instead, make your way to Jordan Lobster Farms for a more satisfying and flavor-forward experience.
